Christmas: it’s the most wonderful time of the year. But, let’s face it, the festive season isn’t without its challenges. Between all the gifts you need to buy (and the money that you need to spend), the seemingly never-ending array of work functions and, if you’re hosting, all the food prep that needs to be done, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Fortunately, there are ways to make Christmas easier, especially when it comes to shopping. Here’s how to do it.

Plan ahead

The key to making your festive season run smoothly is to be prepared. Start your Christmas shopping as early as possible so you’re not in a mad rush in the week leading up to the big day. Make a budget and stick to it, no matter what. This applies to gifts as well as food and decorations. Before you hit the shops, take the time to check a centre map to work out where the stores you need are located, then plan your best course of action. And make sure you visit customer service – as the people in the know, they can tell you all the new and best places to shop, the most popular gifts and where to find a much-needed coffee.

Be a smart shopper

Many stores offer extended trading hours to cater to Christmas shoppers, so take advantage of them. Shopping at a time that works for you is not only convenient and makes your life easier but you’ll also avoid big crowds and be able to browse at a more leisurely pace. And let free in-store gift-wrapping be your secret weapon this season. It takes the time and hassle out of the chore so you can enjoy Christmas Eve with a glass of champagne and a mince pie in hand (rather than covered in ribbons and sticky tape like years gone by).

Make time for you

Make a commitment to not shop until you drop. Take plenty of breaks, such as hitting the food court for a snack or treating yourself to a manicure. Christmas should be a joy-filled occasion, after all. In fact, the same should be said for the entire festive season. Break up the busyness with things you love to do. Have brunch with a close friend, go for a long walk and pump your favourite playlist, book in that massage you’ve been dreaming about. While it’s a time for giving to others, indulging in a little self-care can make a world of difference in ensuring you stay cool, calm and collected this Christmas.
