Smithfield Shopping Centre Celebrates 40 Years

On Thursday, 19 March 2026, Smithfield Shopping Centre marks a remarkable milestone—40 years since opening its doors to Cairns’ northern beaches community.

What began in 1986 as a simple shopping destination has grown into the beating heart of our region, a cherished gathering place where generations have celebrated life’s moments, formed lasting traditions, and created memories that define who we are. This Community Celebration Day honours not just a building, but four decades of shared experiences, family milestones, and the countless everyday moments—first jobs, weekend outings, chance encounters with old friends—that have woven Smithfield into the fabric of our community.

Morning Festivities (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM)

The celebration begins with a live radio outside broadcast featuring competitions, exclusive giveaways, and interactive entertainment that brings our community together. Throughout the morning, families can explore displays showcasing highlights from Smithfield’s journey. Children will delight in professional face painting, arts and craft activities, and giant games designed for all ages.

Anniversary Ceremony (11:00 AM)

Join us for the official Birthday Cake-Cutting Ceremony, a special moment featuring local dignitaries and long-time Smithfield supporters. This centrepiece event celebrates everyone who has made this centre a treasured part of northern beaches life.

Shortly after, witness the sealing of our 40-Year Time Capsule—a legacy project containing centre memorabilia, community letters, photos, and items representing life in 2026. Scheduled to open in 2046, this capsule will carry our stories forward to future generations.

A Taste of Nostalgia

Throughout the entire day, experience our 1986 Price Rollback, where select food retailers offer throwback $2 pricing on items like coffee, sushi rolls, hot chips and bubble tea—a fun tribute to the value that made Smithfield beloved from day one.

Evening Celebration (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM)

As the sun sets, our Restaurant Precinct comes alive with a vibrant Dinner + Movie experience. Enjoy live acoustic music spanning four decades, giant outdoor games, and complimentary face painting while dining at participating restaurants.
